Historical 1914 Fire
In 1914 a devastating fire destroyed every building from the bank corner of Front and Cross Streets to the old Fragrant Fields building at 102 S Garden.
Three lives were lost – Howard Snider, William Manning, and Jake Hase. *

FIRE DEPARTMENTS CALLED TO DONGOLA
DECEMBER 30 1924 — The Carbondale Fire Department was called to Dongola early this morning, where a fire was raging. Chief John Cooney and Traffic Officer Floyd Jones took the fire truck, leaving here about 3:00 o'clock. They made the trip to Dongola, a distance of 30 miles in 45 minues. Two business houses, a clothing store and a dry good store, were burned. The fire department from Mounds was also called to Dongola.
